The Media Calls out the Red Cross

"People across the country and around the world donated $5.5 million to the Canadian Red Cross to help the people of Slave Lake after a wildfire devastated the Alberta town one year ago.

But so far, more money has been spent on operating the charity in the community than in direct aid to its people."

Read it on Global News: Global News | Red Cross spends more money operating in Slave Lake than in direct aid

It's Been One Year...

Looking back, the events that happened on year ago in Slave Lake and MD #124 seem so surreal. There are some great news articles out there, and I am posting some links on them. I hope no one forgets, as it has been happening and frankly it's a little frustrating, about the 3 other volunteer fire departments that were working with the Slave Lake volunteer department. We need to remember those hero's as well, along with the countless men and women who did not evacuate and stayed behind to fight the fire with their equipment, providing food and water, and those who did anything they could to help. We salute you!

Great interviews with some residents:  http://www.globaltvedmonton.com/sharing+their+stories+slave+lake+interviews/6442639951/story.html

Hopefully someone in the government reads this one:http://www.globaltvedmonton.com/questions+surround+the+evacuation+of+slave+lake/6442639380/story.html

There are Wildfires Burning Already in Alberta...

Please please please be vigilant with your quads, dirtbikes, cigarettes, campfires, barrel burns, etc because there are already wildfires burning throughout our province. And although there is no ban, the current warning level has now been upgraded to EXTREME.

Lakeside Leader

Picture
I cannot say ENOUGH good things about the local paper. For a small town, the Lakeside Leader is a powerhouse of information and those who work there are amazing, and very talented writers and photographers. Please remember to support them.

And as well the fantastic Caezer Ng who has this great tip for you:  An anonymous lawyer called and he asked us to give an insurance tip to our readers: His client's insurance company refused to extend the time limit on finalizing claims (usually one year). Check with your insurance company to find out if you'll be given an extension, otherwise you may have less than a month left to claim your losses from the fire.

In Case You Missed It and Was Wondering Where the $ Was...

The Community Foundation of Grande Prairie, after dodging questions as to how much they had really recieved throughout the fires for Slave Lake, has finally cut a cheque of $100, 000. People were very worried and I was too, because there was A LOT of grey area when it came to this charity, but here is the news story for you:  http://www.dailyheraldtribune.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3517773

The Community Donation Allocation Committee Launches Website

“Enhancing the future of Slave Lake and surrounding area through the disbursement of donated funds to legacy and other projects.”

The wildfires of May 2011 devastated the Town of Slave Lake and surrounding area. Many homes and buildings were lost, including the new town library. The outpouring of help from many generous donors was overwhelming. Cash donations to rebuild our community have been combined in one fund governed by the Community Donation Allocation Committee.
Fund Applications are being accepted now until May 30, 2012.For more information, please visit: http://lslcdac.com/ On their website is also a chart detailing how over $200,000 has been allocated already!

Resident Martha Urquhart is making a booklet to help others

Hi Angie: Could you let people know that I"m compiling suggestions, concerns, comments re: what they would say to someone else about how to deal with a wildfire? I'm thinking that people could think about what worked for them, what they wished they had done, what they wished they had known, etc. about dealing with insurance, dealing with a wildfire, preparing for a wildfire, etc. I want to compile some sort of a booklet with advice by the people who had to actually go through this event. Knowing what they do know because of what they experienced. If you could just help me get the message out that I'm doing this, that would be great! My email address is: ms.m.urquhart@gmail.com
- Martha is working with another lady to get the message out and is looking for your suggestions. Great idea ladies!
