Flooding (July 7-8)

HIGH WATER WARNING

The heavy rainfall this morning caused high water and some flooding in the Town of Slave Lake and region.  Mooney Creek is running very high and is nearly overflowing at Highway 2, but the Highway remains open.  Sawridge Creek is not flooding and the bypass is working as designed.  Crews are currently working to make sure no fallen trees or debris build up and block water flow. Town staff shut off some storm sewer valves to prevent back flow from high water levels in the Creek.  Due to the heavy mid-morning downpour, storm sewers were temporarily overcharged and water accumulated on streets as a result, but this has abated. The Town also dispatched vacuum trucks and pumps to affected areas and the Fire Department is checking manholes. There are some reports of residential flooding in the Southeast portions of town, and residents are advised to check their basements.
