Help for Renters and Landlords

In 2007, at the height of the booming economy, the Alberta Government changed the Landlord and Tennancy Act to protect not only renters, but landlords as well. Here are some point form rules to help you out, and some links that can get you more information as well!

Did you know?
- By law, landlords are only allowed to increase rent once per year, unfortunately there is no limit to what they can increase rent to.

- If you are renting an apartment, your landlord MUST give you 3 months written notice before increasing the rent (this is for month to month renting)

- If you are renting a mobile home, your landlord MUST give you at least 180 written notice (month to month renting)

- If you are under a lease, the landlord cannot increase your rent until it is 365 after you moved in, or 365 days after the last negotiated increase, which ever comes later. If the 365th day is during the fixed term tenancy agreement, rent cannot be increased until that term ends.

- If your landlord wants to turn your apartment into a condo, they must give one full year to end tenancy and in that time can't increase your rent.

There are so many more resources available through the government of Alberta, including protecting yourself as a landlord and tenant. Please call 1-877-427-4088 if you are having any issues or have questions. Also, there is a great website that can help you!
